The Batter Ring Baker
My Experiences with the baker....
I was never able to find the heavy mold he talked about but I have had no problems with the light one at this
point.  All the materials were found over time at Goodwill etc.  The ring sits on the diffuser so that there is a
space....only the edge of the ring touches the edge of the diffuser.   I used a drill press instead of cutting the
hole with a chisel...got in a hurry and got a bit sloppy.  If you happen to own a Scorch Buster and Riser Bar
(Backpacker's Pantry) this may help keep your baking from burning...especially if you have a stove with poor
simmer control.  I tried it first at home on the gas stove and then for a few days on an outing with a  2 burner LP
Coleman stove that I can turn the burner way down.  My first experiment was at home with a box cake mix.  A
typical box cake mix is WAY to much for this...it will rise and cover the holes...way bad.....like the article
says...only about 2 cups of mix or so.  I purchased some different flavors of Jiffy Mix which is a perfect size for
the mold....Cornbread, apple, and one other of Jiffy's muffin mix.  I had really nice result.s..it takes a bit longer
than the box instructions.  On my last baking trial I used the bottom of the cookie tin rather than the lid...I think
that helps hold the heat better on the outside of the mold and cut down baking time.  The ring and diffuser fit
into the cookie tin anyway.  The only obvious disadvantage is the space the thing takes in a pack...but them
maybe a guy can pack the mixes in the ring etc to save space.
